Project Description

ART, ECOLOGY AND CREATIVITY

I SRAW (International Sonic Reuse ArtWorkShop) is an international collective of artists directed by Rocco Papia made up in 2020 to research and develop Creative Reuse Artworks.

The Creative Reuse Artworks (C.R.A.) represent a novel approach to creating works of art by using urban and industrial waste and promoting ecological and sustainable development.

C.R.A. offer a unique vision of sustainability and creativity and aims to encourage innovative and creative processes that focus on repurposing industrial and urban waste, making use of digital technologies, music, and sculpture.

By creating C.R.A. artworks, artists contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly society, while also creating inspiring and thought-provoking works of art that challenge our understanding of what can be considered “waste.”

The methodology of the collective is developed in artistic residencies in which artists, researchers and creative people can develop the design of works starting from the materials and the place/territory hosting them.

Sonus horti

S.R.A. at the Orto Botanico 1545 Padova

Sonus Horti (The Sound of the Garden) is an art project conceived by Rocco Papia and realized with Nikki Rifiutile as part of the International Sound Reuse ArtWorkshop collective.

The project stems from an artistic research on the ideal of the Hortus Conclusus, a heavenly place in which to seek harmony between human beings and the universe. In particular, the conception of the works moves from the suggestions of the physical, historical and philosophical place of the Botanical Garden of Padua 1545, the oldest university botanical garden in the world, and to its particular architecture made of squares and circles inscribed into each other.

The Sonus Horti works are 3 aerophone complexes that use water to move air, designed to be played by several people at once, inviting users to share the sound experience and seek collective harmony.

Sonus Horti Exhibit:

  • University of Padua for the Risvegli Festival 2023 held at the Botanical Garden of Padua from May 1 to 8, 2023.

the garden of the sounds

An interactive garden of S.R.A.

The Garden of Sounds is a sound installation consisting of 6 sound sculptures made through the creative reuse of waste. Walking through it, one encounters strange plants, metal mushrooms and fascinating structures that invite one to touch, shake, beat and explore in search of New Sounds for a New World.

The installation was conceived by Rocco Papia and the artists of the ISRAW collective as part of an artistic residency at the Casa della Cultura “Italo Calvino” in Calderara di Reno during Boom Cantiere Creativo 2022.

The residency was realised within the framework of the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme and in collaboration with CULTURARA – Department of Culture of the Municipality of Calderara di Reno and Cronopios.

RESTITUCIONS MEDITERRÀNIES

The impact of mass tourism: sculpture, photography and sound art

Seven international artists from different disciplines meet in Palma (Illes Balears) in a research and artistic production residency directed by Italian artist Rocco Papia.

The objective is to investigate the impact of mass tourism on the territory, the anthropological and cultural structure and the Mallorcan ecosystem.

The exhibition Restituciones Mediterrànies is born: 6 works created from waste collected from the beaches and cliffs of the island, produced with electronics, video and sound art.

The works involve the public through the manipulation of works, the exploration of sound archives, the interaction with the voice through sensors and photographic research, creating a conceptual and multisensory journey

Interview to Rocco Papia about the artwork “Magaluf Impact” –  TVES CULTURAS 2 program broadcasted on 06/05/2024.
